To all you listeners of entitled opinions, this is your host Robert Harrison.
00:00:38.000 |
Coming to you from Lockdown City.
00:00:41.000 |
As some of you know, KZSU is closed to studios for the spring.
00:00:47.000 |
And that means that Victoria and I can't bring you a full season of
00:00:52.000 |
Crossfire shows as we usually do at this time of the year.
00:00:57.000 |
The full feast is on hold, but don't despair.
00:01:01.000 |
We've decided to open the entitled opinions happy hour bar.
00:01:05.000 |
And offer you up some small shots of poetry on the house.
00:01:10.000 |
No intros, no commentary, just some lyrics distilled down the hatch.
00:01:20.000 |
We're inaugurating our open house happy hour today with a few choice shooters from our old friend Jimmy Hendrix.
00:01:28.000 |
Jimmy Hendrix, the lyricist was almost on a par with Jimmy Hendrix the guitar player.
00:01:34.000 |
A fact that sometimes gets lost in all the noise and distortions that surround him.
00:01:41.000 |
So here are the lyrics of some of Hendrix's songs that I've selected to read aloud for you.
00:01:48.000 |
For those of you who might want more, I refer you to the Jimmy Hendrix solo show that we aired back in June 2009.
00:01:58.000 |
Stay tuned, single mod Jimmy coming up.
00:02:09.000 |
Jimmy Hendrix, my friend.
00:02:14.000 |
Well I'm looking through Harlem, my stomach squeal just a little more,
00:02:18.000 |
a stagecoach full of feathers and footprints, pulls up to soapbox store.
00:02:24.000 |
Now a lady with a pearl-handled necktie tied to the driver's fence, breathes in my face, bourbon and coke possessed words.
00:02:34.000 |
And haven't I seen you somewhere in hell or was it just an accident?
00:02:40.000 |
You know how I felt then, and so, before I could ask, was it the east or west side?
00:02:47.000 |
My feet they houled in pain, the wheels of a bandwagon cut very deep, but not as deep in my mind as the rain,
00:02:56.000 |
and as they pulled away I could see her words stagger and fall on my muddy tent.
00:03:03.000 |
Well I picked them up, brushed them off to see what they say, and you wouldn't believe.
00:03:09.000 |
Come around my room with the tooth in the middle, and bring along the bottle and a president.
00:03:16.000 |
And sometimes it's not so easy baby, especially when your only friend,
00:03:21.000 |
talks, sees, looks and feels like you, and you do just the same as him.
00:03:28.000 |
Gets very lonely up this road baby, but I've got more to say.
00:03:34.000 |
Well I'm riding through LA on a bicycle built for fools, and I've seen one of my old buddies,
00:03:41.000 |
and he say, "You don't look the way you usually do?"
00:03:45.000 |
I say, "Well some people look like a coin box."
00:03:49.000 |
He say, "Looks like you ain't got no coins to spare."
00:03:54.000 |
And I laid back and I thought to myself, and I said this,
00:03:58.000 |
"I just picked up my pride from underneath the payphone,
00:04:02.000 |
and comb this breath right out of my hair."
00:04:05.000 |
And sometimes it's not so easy, especially when your only friend,
00:04:11.000 |
talks, sees, looks and feels like you, and you do just the same as him.
00:04:19.000 |
Just got out of a Scandinavian jail, and I'm on my way straight home to you,
00:04:25.000 |
but I feel so dizzy I take a quick look in the mirror to make sure my friends here with me too.
00:04:31.000 |
And you know good well, I don't drink coffee, so you feel my cup full of sand,
00:04:37.000 |
and the frozen tea leaves on the bottom,
00:04:38.000 |
sharing lipstick around the broken edge, and my coat that you let your dog lay by the fire on,
00:04:45.000 |
and your cat he attacked me from his pillbox ledge,
00:04:49.000 |
and I thought you were my friend too.
00:04:52.000 |
Man, my shadow comes in line before you.
00:04:56.000 |
I'm finding out that it's not so easy, especially when your only friend talks, looks, sees, and feels like you,
00:05:05.000 |
and you do just the same like him.
00:05:09.000 |
Lord, it's lonely here. Yeah, pass me that bottle over there.
00:05:14.000 |
Burning of the midnight lamp.
00:05:17.000 |
The morning is dead, and the day is to...
00:05:28.000 |
There's nothing left here to meet me, but the velvet moon.
00:05:33.000 |
All my loneliness I have felt today is like a little more than enough to make a man throw himself away,
00:05:42.000 |
and I continue to burn the midnight lamp alone.
00:05:47.000 |
Now the smiling portrait of you is still hanging on my frowning wall,
00:05:53.000 |
but it really doesn't bother me too much at all.
00:05:58.000 |
It's just the ever-falling dust that makes it so hard for me to see that forgotten earring laying on the floor,
00:06:06.000 |
facing coldly towards the door.
00:06:10.000 |
I continue to burn the midnight lamp Lord alone, burn, lonely, lonely, lonely.
00:06:19.000 |
Loneliness is such a drag.
00:06:24.000 |
So I sit here and pace that same old fireplace gives rise to the same old explosion going through my mind,
00:06:32.000 |
and soon enough time will tell about the circus and the wishing well,
00:06:39.000 |
and someone who will buy and sell for me, someone who will toll my bell,
00:06:44.000 |
and I continue to burn the same old lamp alone.
00:06:49.000 |
Yeah, lightning, can you hear me calling so lonely,
00:06:53.000 |
gonna blow my mind? Yeah, lonely, lonely, my mind.
00:07:02.000 |
The wind cries, Mary.
00:07:07.000 |
After all the jacks are in their boxes and the clowns have all gone to bed,
00:07:12.000 |
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street, footprints, dressed in red,
00:07:18.000 |
and the wind whispers, Mary.
00:07:23.000 |
A broom is drierly sweeping up the broken pieces of yesterday's life,
00:07:29.000 |
somewhere a queen is weeping, somewhere a king has no wife,
00:07:34.000 |
and the wind it cries, Mary.
00:07:39.000 |
The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow and shine their emptiness down on my bed.
00:07:45.000 |
The tiny island sags downstream, because the life that lived is dead,
00:07:51.000 |
and the wind screams, Mary.
00:07:57.000 |
Will the wind ever remember the names it has blown in the past,
00:08:02.000 |
and with this crutch it's old age and it's wisdom, it whispers, "No, this will be the last."
00:08:08.000 |
And the wind cries, Mary.
00:08:14.000 |
Love or confusion?
00:08:22.000 |
Is that the stars in the sky or is it raining far from now?
00:08:26.000 |
Will it burn me if I touch the sun so bit so round?
00:08:31.000 |
Will I be truthful in choosing you as the one for me?
00:08:35.000 |
Is this love baby or is it just confusion?
00:08:41.000 |
Oh, my mind is so mixed up going round and round.
00:08:45.000 |
Must there be all these colors without names, without sounds?
00:08:50.000 |
My heart burns with feeling, but oh, but my mind is cold and reeling.
00:08:56.000 |
Is this love baby or is it confusion?
00:09:02.000 |
Oh, my head is pounding, pounding, going round and round and round and round.
00:09:08.000 |
Must there always be these colors?
00:09:12.000 |
You tell me baby, is this love or confusion?
00:09:16.000 |
We must get together and find out.
00:09:20.000 |
Confusion.
00:09:28.000 |
In from the storm.
00:09:32.000 |
Well, I just came back today, I just came back from the storm, I said, "I just came back baby, I just came back from the storm."
00:09:40.000 |
Well, I didn't know it then, but I was suffering, suffering from I love to keep me warm.
00:09:47.000 |
It was so cold and lonely, the wind and crying blue rain were tearing me up.
00:09:53.000 |
It was so cold and lonely, the crying blue rain was tearing me up, oh, tearing me up.
00:10:00.000 |
I want to thank you my sweet darling for digging in the mud and picking me up.
00:10:05.000 |
Thank you so very much.
00:10:08.000 |
It was a terrible rain that was burning my eyes.
00:10:11.000 |
It was you my love who brought me in.
00:10:14.000 |
I love you so much, I'll never stray from you again.
00:10:18.000 |
I just came back baby, I just came back to get my baby on her way.
00:10:30.000 |
Castles made of sand.
00:10:34.000 |
Down the street you can hear her scream, "You're a disgrace."
00:10:38.000 |
As she slams the door and his drunken face,
00:10:41.000 |
and now he stands outside and all the neighbors start to gossip and rule.
00:10:46.000 |
He cries, "Oh girl, you must be mad.
00:10:49.000 |
What happened to the sweet love he when me had?"
00:10:53.000 |
Against the door he leans and starts a scene and his tears fall and burn on the garden green.
00:11:00.000 |
And so Castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually.
00:11:08.000 |
A little Indian brave who before he was ten played war games in the woods with his Indian friends,
00:11:15.000 |
and he built a dream that when he grew up he would be a fierce warrior Indian chief.
00:11:22.000 |
Many moons pass before the dream grew strong, until tomorrow he would sing his first war song
00:11:28.000 |
and fight his first battle, but something went wrong, surprise attack, killed him in his sleep that night.
00:11:36.000 |
And so Castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.
00:11:45.000 |
There was a young girl whose heart was a frown because she was crippled for life,
00:11:50.000 |
and she couldn't speak a sound, and she wished and prayed she could stop living,
00:11:55.000 |
so she decided to die.
00:11:59.000 |
She drove her wheelchair to the edge of the shore, and to her legs she smiled,
00:12:04.000 |
"You won't hurt me no more."
00:12:06.000 |
But then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say, "Look, a golden wing ship is passing my way."
00:12:14.000 |
And it really didn't ever stop.
00:12:17.000 |
It just kept on going.
00:12:20.000 |
And so Castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually.
00:12:32.000 |
Little wing.
00:12:36.000 |
Well, she's walking through the clouds with a circus mind that's running wild,
00:12:42.000 |
butterflies and zebras and moon beams, and fairy tales.
00:12:47.000 |
That's all she ever thinks about, writing with the wind.
00:12:52.000 |
When I'm sad she comes to me with a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
00:12:57.000 |
It's all right. She says, "It's all right. Take anything you want from me."
00:13:03.000 |
Anything.
00:13:05.000 |
Fly on, Little wing.
00:13:08.000 |
Boldest love.
00:13:18.000 |
Anger he smiles, towering and shiny metallic purple armor,
00:13:23.000 |
Queen jealousy, envy, waits behind him, or fiery green gown,
00:13:30.000 |
sneers at the grassy ground.
00:13:33.000 |
Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted.
00:13:37.000 |
They quietly understand, once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready,
00:13:43.000 |
but wonder why the fight is on.
00:13:46.000 |
But they're all boldest love.
00:13:48.000 |
Yes, they're all boldest love.
00:13:51.000 |
They're all boldest love.
00:13:53.000 |
Just ask the axis.
00:13:57.000 |
My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war
00:14:01.000 |
and ribbons of euphoria.
00:14:04.000 |
Orange is young, full of daring, but very unsteady for the first go round.
00:14:09.000 |
My yellow in this case is not so mellow.
00:14:13.000 |
In fact, I'm trying to say, "It's frightened like me."
00:14:17.000 |
And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from giving my life to a rainbow like you.
00:14:24.000 |
But I'm, yes, I'm boldest love.
00:14:28.000 |
I'm boldest love.
00:14:30.000 |
Just ask the axis.
00:14:32.000 |
He knows everything.
00:14:34.000 |
Hey, I've got glasses and five feet of a drink
